Happy Father’s Day to dads everywhere. I am forever grateful to my father, who as a surgeon like me, taught me the importance of hard work, sacrifice, and compassion. He taught me the core beliefs on which I have based my professional life: there is no substitute for preparation, take your work seriously, remember the academic and anatomic underpinning of everything you do, treat your patients as if they were your family, always do the right thing for the patient no matter what time of day or night, don’t let negativity stand in the way of your dreams, everything worth doing is worth doing right, and keep your idealism and passion in everything you do. He taught me to play chess when I was 4, to recite P.B. Shelley when I was 10, to navigate the freeways of LA when I was 16, and to memorize the branches of the external carotid when I was 20. He taught me to value family and heritage, and he inspires me to be strong even in the face of challenges. Because of my dad’s example, I married my best friend and a man of principle and kindness like my dad, who, despite a distaste for instagram, is the most amazing father to our 5 children and the best husband I could ask for.
